Binance investigating hack as suspicious outflows reach up to $5.8 billion

Background

Background

The incident, reported on Oct. 29, 2026, is being tracked through public block explorers across ten wallets, eight of which are labeled as exploiters. Stablecoin issuers can blacklist addresses because their tokens are centrally issued, whereas ETH has no issuer able to freeze it, which is why attackers swapped freezable stablecoins into ether. Binance operates the SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) insurance fund, which a community commenter valued at roughly $1 billion in BTC.

Binance said it is investigating a security incident after wallets linked to the exchange were drained of at least $5.5 billion on Thursday, with on-chain tallies cited by The Block putting suspicious outflows at up to $5.8 billion across Ethereum, Bitcoin and Tron. Binance has not confirmed that user funds were affected, though security researchers widely describe the incident as a hack that would be the largest in the industry's history.

The affected venue is the largest centralized exchange by trading volume, so unresolved questions about the scale of losses and whether customer balances are impaired bear directly on how traders price counterparty and custody risk across the market. Bloomberg reported that the suspected hack triggered emergency asset freezes and sent digital asset prices tumbling.

Tether blacklisted 975.1 million USDT and Circle blacklisted 823 million USDC in the main receiving wallet, and Binance co-CEO Yi He said Ripple also froze about $200 million in RLUSD. The attacker routed funds through Uniswap contracts and borrowed ETH on Aave against USDT collateral — roughly 253,000 ETH (about $570 million) sat in two wallets with no outgoing transfers as of 22:07 UTC — while Aave froze its V3 markets on Ethereum mainnet and Solana-based Kamino paused borrow markets as a precaution.

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The event transmits directly through exchange-solvency and liquidity channels: BTC, ETH and BNB are the most exposed assets, with bitcoin falling below $79,000, BNB down about 7% and privacy coin Monero up about 6% as some funds rotated toward assets without a freezeable issuer. DeFi lending and DEX venues used as exit routes — Aave and Uniswap on Ethereum, plus Solana protocols such as Kamino — face collateral and market-pause risk, while stablecoin issuers' blacklist actions shift part of the loss back onto centralized control points.

Discussion

Commenters focused on Binance's capacity to absorb the loss, with one arguing the roughly $1 billion SAFU fund in BTC would be wiped out and likening the episode to past centralized-exchange blowups at the end of crypto bear markets. Others catalogued the stablecoin blacklist transactions by Tether and Circle, questioned why large exchanges lack rapid wallet-migration safeguards while funds were still being drained, and pointed to independent researcher Molly White treating the incident as real.

Anthropic is asking Wall Street to believe in AGI

Background

Background

An S-1 is the disclosure document a company files with the SEC before a U.S. public listing, covering business model, financials and risk factors. SemiAnalysis is a semiconductor and AI research firm, and Decoder is The Verge's interview podcast hosted by Nilay Patel. AGI, or artificial general intelligence, refers to a hypothetical AI system with capabilities rivaling or exceeding humans across tasks, and the framing of the episode is whether Anthropic's public-market pitch rests on that longer-term bet.

Anthropic has filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering, and the latest episode of The Verge's Decoder features SemiAnalysis analyst Joey Brookhart walking through the filing's financials and strategic implications. Anthropic said it intends to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market.

The filing would make Anthropic one of the first frontier AI labs to pursue a public listing, putting its revenue, costs and risk disclosures on the record and creating a reference point other AI companies raising capital can be measured against.

Anthropic's own announcement describes the document as a registration statement relating to a proposed IPO, meaning the offering has not yet been priced or completed. The Decoder episode is an interview with Brookhart analyzing the S-1's numbers rather than a report of new disclosures from the company.

rss · The Verge AI · · Single source

Impact analysis

The filing mainly transmits to crypto through sentiment and capital-allocation benchmarks: a public frontier lab gives investors a disclosed, audited comparison point for AI-related valuations, which can influence appetite for AI-themed tokens and AI-adjacent equity issuance. No direct crypto asset or venue is involved in the transaction itself.

Google Releases Gemini 4 Carbon, Returning to the Top Tier and Beating Opus 5.5 to Top the AA Intelligence Index

Background

Background

Argon, Google's previous flagship model, had been opened to the public about two weeks before this release. The Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index is a primarily text-based, English-language evaluation suite that combines multiple production benchmark scores into a weighted average scaled from 0 to 100.

Google released Gemini 4 Carbon, which scored 59 on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index v5.0, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 58 and GPT-6 Astra at 57, and 9 points above Google's previous flagship Argon. The release comes roughly half a month after Argon was opened to the public.

The improvement is concentrated in cybersecurity: Carbon can discover software vulnerabilities, verify whether they are exploitable, and generate patches, scoring 88.2%, 54.8% and 71.0% respectively on the three corresponding tests — first place on all three. Google is initially limiting access to a small number of cyber-defense teams rather than releasing it publicly.

Carbon does not lead across the board — it still trails Opus 5.5 in Artificial Analysis's coding agent ranking. Its published promotional API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, the same as Argon, and will double once the promotion ends.

telegram · theblockbeats · · 2 sources

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The link to crypto markets is indirect: frontier-model benchmark competition feeds the AI-agent narrative that several crypto AI tokens trade on, and the emphasis on automated vulnerability discovery and patching touches AI-security tooling. Restricted access and unchanged promotional pricing limit any near-term effect on usage-driven demand.

Discussion

Commenters focused heavily on availability, with one writing that the score "doesn't mean jack without access to it" and that delayed and restricted releases had cost Google their confidence. Others praised Gemini's ability to explain scientific concepts and Argon's Google Search and Maps integration, while one argued that Carbon trailing Opus 5.5 on coding shows how strong Opus 5.5 is as a coding agent; Argon users also complained about tight usage limits on the Pro plan.

Multiple Polymarket Users Report Stolen Funds as Platform Restricts Trading and

Background

Background

Polymarket is a prediction-market platform where users trade on the outcomes of future events. In June, the company reported that hackers drained more than $2.9 million in user funds by compromising a third-party vendor; it said that vulnerability was fixed, the vendor has been removed from its website and affected users would be fully reimbursed, with wallets losing under $10,000 receiving automatic refunds by October 30 and larger losses requiring a signed release form. Frontend compromises — in which wallet-draining code is injected into a site or its third-party scripts — have also hit other DeFi venues, including Balancer and Aerodrome.

Multiple Polymarket users reported unauthorized transfers out of their accounts, with some claiming losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars, prompting the platform to enter cancel-only mode, pause relayer actions and temporarily halt trading. Polymarket said one of its third-party providers had been compromised, that the issue affecting Polymarket.com had been identified and fixed, and that the matter has been referred to law enforcement.

The incident triggered a platform-wide trading restriction on one of the largest prediction-market venues, and Polymarket said anyone affected "will be made whole." The root cause remains unconfirmed, with users suspecting a frontend compromise.

Cancel-only mode allowed traders to cancel existing orders but not place new ones, and relayer actions — the service that submits users' signed transactions to the blockchain — were paused; the Predictions Trading API was listed as experiencing a major outage, with Polymarket reporting all systems operational as of 7:05 pm UTC. Security firm Hudson Rock said a DebugBear-hosted script containing wallet-draining code hard-codes the same fallback recipient address as a wallet flagged as the suspected attacker's, which Arkham data showed holding about $2.65 million in POL after multiple USDC.e-to-POL swaps through Relay.

telegram · wublockchainenglish · · 4 sources

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The exposure runs through Polymarket's Polygon-based rails: USDC.e deposits and POL holdings in user wallets, plus the relayer channel that submits signed transactions, are the directly affected segments, and the halt froze order placement across its prediction markets. The suspected frontend/third-party vendor vector extends supply-chain risk to other DeFi venues that rely on externally hosted scripts and relayers.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) and trade[XYZ] have announced their plan to use

Background

Background

HIP-3, or "Builder-Deployed Perpetuals", is a Hyperliquid upgrade that went live on mainnet on October 13, 2025, allowing independent operators to permissionlessly launch their own perpetual futures markets on Hyperliquid's infrastructure. Perpetual futures are derivative contracts that track an asset's price without an expiration date, and Hyperliquid is the largest decentralized exchange for such instruments by DefiLlama data. According to the reporting, President Donald Trump said on Aug. 19 that CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into the US in a "fully compliant and legal fashion." Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller, listed as a trade[XYZ] investor, said he was "excited to be an investor in trade(xyz)", and ICE has made a strategic investment.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the operator of the New York Stock Exchange, and trade[XYZ] announced on Thursday a plan to use Hyperliquid as the infrastructure layer for perpetual futures markets serving US traders across crypto, equities, commodities, foreign exchange and other real-world assets, subject to regulatory approvals. Under the structure, Hyperliquid supplies the underlying technology via HIP-3, trade[XYZ] designs and implements the markets, and ICE operates the regulated market and clearing structure.

The arrangement would give US retail traders a regulated route to Hyperliquid-based perpetual futures, while handing ICE a new entry point into retail trading; ICE said the vehicle would run separately from its institutional futures business. OKX CEO Star said the project is being advanced jointly by ICE, trade[XYZ] and OKX, with retail distribution to flow through an ICE-OKX joint venture.

ICE said it has signed a definitive agreement with Trade.xyz and will be the exclusive US operator, with a dedicated clearing structure intended to shield its existing customers — more than 99% of its market participation is institutional — from retail counterparty risk. Existing trade[XYZ] HIP-3 markets will remain unchanged, and HIP-3 deployers remain independent operators responsible for their own deployments.

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The announcement moved Hyperliquid's native token HYPE, which rose about 20% over 24 hours to trade above $96, approaching September's all-time high of $97.96, reflecting how the HYPE token and Hyperliquid's onchain perps venue are the most direct market exposure to the news. Any shift toward a regulated US venue would transmit through the regulatory and clearing channel rather than through immediate liquidity changes, since the plan remains subject to approvals and no market is live.

Bitcoin developers rush to fix 3 security flaws after AI uncovers them

Background

Background

Bitcoin Core, the reference implementation used by most full nodes on the network, asks researchers to report vulnerabilities privately to security@bitcoincore.org, where each report is assigned a severity category before being documented in public security advisories. The project has recently adopted a structured public disclosure policy requiring issues to be documented and released after a defined waiting period following a patched release, ending the practice of quietly shipping some fixes.

Bitcoin developers moved quickly to patch three security vulnerabilities in the protocol's code after an AI system identified them, CryptoSlate reported. The flaws were uncovered with AI assistance and remediated by developers working on the codebase.

The episode is being framed as a demonstration of both the value and the risks of AI-driven vulnerability research aimed at critical cryptocurrency infrastructure.

google_news · CryptoSlate · · Single source

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The transmission channel runs through node operations rather than trading directly: because Bitcoin Core underpins most full nodes and mining infrastructure, operators face upgrade decisions that touch network resilience, and any doubt about consensus-level code can weigh on sentiment toward the asset. The flaws were patched, and the report did not characterize severity or exploitability as material loss.

Singapore Police: Some Retail-Purchased Ledger Hardware Wallets Contained Malicious Components, Total Losses About S$3.5 Million

Background

Background

Ledger is a French hardware wallet maker founded in Paris in 2014; its devices store private keys offline. A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is the backup that can restore a non-custodial wallet and all its keys on another device, which is why capturing it defeats the purpose of a hardware wallet. Supply-chain attacks target the less-secure links around a product — such as distribution and retail — rather than the manufacturer's own systems.

Singapore police said on October 28 that some Ledger hardware wallets bought from retail stores in the country contained malicious components able to capture users' recovery phrases or private keys. At least two cases have been reported since September 10, 2026, with combined losses of about S$3.5 million (roughly US$2.7 million).

The affected devices are sold through ordinary retail channels, so users who believe they hold keys offline may still have had their recovery phrases exposed. Police said the unauthorized parties used the captured data to access wallets and move assets without the owners' knowledge or consent.

Singapore police said they have contacted Ledger, which is reviewing the affected cases, and that investigations are ongoing. The announcement did not specify how many devices were affected or which retailers were involved.

telegram · foresightnews · · 3 sources

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The incident bears on the hardware-wallet segment of self-custody: it exposes a retail-distribution channel risk rather than a flaw in the devices' firmware, which could shift user scrutiny toward where and how signing devices are sourced. Any broader market effect would run through sentiment around self-custody tooling rather than through asset prices directly.

Google earnings call: Gemini reaches 1 billion monthly active users, but capex expected to rise sharply next year

Background

Background

Gemini 4 Carbon was announced on October 28, 2026 as the successor to Gemini 4 Argon, which Google had rolled out about two weeks earlier, and is positioned for cybersecurity and long-horizon task performance. Genie 4 is Google DeepMind's interactive world model, and TPUs are Google's in-house ASICs designed to accelerate machine learning workloads.

On the Alphabet Q3 2026 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said the Gemini app has reached 1 billion monthly active users, making it Google's fastest-growing product, and that first-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, up 40% quarter-over-quarter and more than 4x year-over-year. The company also formally announced its new frontier model Gemini 4 Carbon alongside progress on the Genie 4 world model, while guiding 2027 capex to "increase significantly."

Quarterly revenue of $127.6 billion (+25%) and profit both came in slightly below Wall Street expectations, and the stock fell about 9% to 10% in after-hours trading as investors weighed record cloud growth against heavy spending and negative free cash flow.

Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.7 billion on enterprise demand for AI infrastructure, AI solutions and TPU systems, while Google Services grew 11% to $96.3 billion. The company kept its 2026 capex guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion without specifying a 2027 figure, and free cash flow was negative for a second consecutive quarter, which the CFO partly attributed to higher TPU inventory and a $5.2 billion EU fine payment.

telegram · theblockbeats · · Single source

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The read-through for crypto is mainly sentiment and risk appetite rather than direct exposure: a double-digit after-hours drop in a mega-cap AI spender and negative free cash flow feed the debate over AI infrastructure returns, a theme that has moved decentralized compute and AI-adjacent tokens alongside technology equities. Higher capex guidance also bears on demand narratives for AI compute supply chains that some crypto projects reference.

DoorDash to acquire Instacart

Background

Background

U.S. online grocery delivery has become a contested market, with Amazon and Walmart among the largest players competing on delivery fees and speed. DoorDash built its business on restaurant delivery, while Instacart is primarily known for grocery delivery.

DoorDash announced on its corporate newsroom that it will acquire Instacart, bringing two major U.S. delivery platforms under one company. The announcement frames the combination around helping local stores compete.

The deal would concentrate two large local-delivery brands in a single company, prompting immediate questions in community discussion about antitrust review and how grocery and local commerce competition would be affected.

DoorDash's announcement describes the acquisition as intended to help local stores win. The combination would join a restaurant-delivery-led platform with a grocery-focused one.

hackernews · WalterSobchak · · Discussion · Single source

Analysis and references

Discussion

Hacker News commenters focused on antitrust. One argued the overlap is smaller than it appears, saying DoorDash is essentially absent from grocery delivery and that Instacart's non-grocery deliveries are powered by Uber Eats, so the deal might instead help them compete with Walmart and Amazon. Others described DoorDash as a "necessary evil" that local stores dislike over commission rates and driver conduct, warned of dark patterns, and voiced skepticism that antitrust enforcement would materialize.

Welcome Le Chonk: Mistral Large 4 on Hugging Face

Background

Background

Mistral AI is a France-based AI startup founded in 2023 that built its reputation on open-source large language models, with Mistral Large 2 previously serving as its flagship. The company maintains an official organization on Hugging Face, the community platform where open-weight models are typically published for download.

Mistral Large 4, codenamed "Le Chonk", has been published on Hugging Face, and Mistral says the model's weights are now open. According to Mistral's announcement and coverage of it, ML4 is a roughly 1.05-trillion-parameter multimodal mixture-of-experts model that activates about 52 billion parameters and was trained in Europe.

Mistral describes it as the best open-weight model for coding, which would put a trillion-scale multimodal model directly in developers' hands for self-hosted and fine-tuned deployments. The release also extends Mistral's open-model strategy from its earlier flagship generation to a much larger parameter scale.

The model is positioned as open-weight rather than merely API-accessible, with Mistral's announcement pages dated October 6, 2026. Detailed benchmark results were not included in the material reviewed.

Impact analysis

An open-weight frontier model of this scale mainly reaches crypto markets through sentiment in AI-linked tokens and decentralized compute or inference networks, whose pitch rests on cheaper, permissionless access to model capacity. Any effect would run through narrative and perceived demand for distributed compute rather than through a direct operational link.

HTX exits UK, leaving customers to request a 48-hour withdrawal window

Background

Background

HTX, formerly Huobi, is a Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange. Crypto activity in the UK is currently regulated mainly through anti-money-laundering registration with the FCA and the regulator's financial promotion rules. CoinTurk reported that HTX's departure followed an FCA settlement closing the regulator's first legal action against a crypto firm over unlawful financial promotions.

HTX is exiting the UK market and requiring affected customers to request a limited 48-hour withdrawal window instead of retaining normal ongoing access to the exchange. According to CoinTurk reporting, the exit follows a settlement with the UK Financial Conduct Authority over unlawful financial promotions, which the outlet describes as the regulator's first legal action against a crypto firm on those grounds.

UK-based customers lose ongoing access to the platform and must act inside a compressed, request-based window to move their assets. The exit also shows a top-20 exchange withdrawing from a major jurisdiction under regulatory pressure rather than continuing to serve it.

Withdrawal access is request-based rather than automatic, and the window is 48 hours. HTX, formerly known as Huobi, is a Seychelles-based exchange.

google_news · CryptoSlate · · Single source

Impact analysis

The transmission path is local: UK users of one exchange face a custody and liquidity decision, with balances needing to move inside a fixed 48-hour window, which may shift some volume toward FCA-registered venues serving UK customers. No loss of funds or cross-exchange contagion has been reported.

Strategy reports $19.5 billion in Q3 net income as preferred shareholders approve daily dividends

Background

Background

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy Incorporated, changed its legal name in August 2025 and has built its corporate identity around a Bitcoin treasury strategy that offers investors exposure to BTC through equity and fixed-income securities. As of an October 2025 disclosure the company held 640,250 BTC.

Strategy reported $19.5 billion in third-quarter net income and won shareholder approval to move its preferred stocks to daily dividend payments. Per Cointelegraph and Bankless, the change covers four preferred securities — STRC, STRF, STRK and STRD — with daily payouts on STRC starting in November and the other three following in January 2027.

Strategy is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, so its capital-structure decisions are closely watched by investors using its securities as a proxy for BTC exposure. Shifting preferred dividends from periodic to daily payments changes the cash-flow profile of those instruments and the company's ongoing payment obligations to preferred holders.

The approval was confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 28, covering a change the company first floated in September. Daily dividends begin on STRC in November, with STRF, STRK and STRD converted in January 2027.

google_news · The Block · · Single source

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The change transmits to crypto markets through Strategy's preferred securities (STRC, STRF, STRK, STRD), which compete for yield-seeking capital that might otherwise sit in other income instruments, and through the company's capacity to keep funding Bitcoin purchases via capital raises. Strategy's equity and preferreds remain a widely used public-market proxy for BTC exposure, so shifts in their payout structure can feed back into sentiment around corporate-treasury Bitcoin strategies more broadly.

ZachXBT: AXIS Insiders Dump ~42M Tokens From Team Multisig, Triggering 40% Crash

Background

Background

ZachXBT is a pseudonymous blockchain investigator known for independent on-chain forensic work on crypto fraud, scams and thefts. A multisig wallet requires approval from multiple parties before funds can move, and is commonly used to hold project treasuries and team allocations. OTC trades are negotiated privately between two counterparties and settled off exchange rather than on a public order book.

On-chain investigator ZachXBT alleged that suspected Axis Robotics insiders received more than 76 million AXIS tokens (valued at over $12 million) from the team multisig wallet before selling them through decentralized exchanges and depositing funds into Bitget. According to ZachXBT, one insider offloaded roughly 42 million tokens (~5.04 million USDC) directly from the team multisig, triggering a 40% price plunge about one week after AXIS listed on Coinbase, Upbit and Binance.

Axis Robotics pushed back, saying 83.5% of team and investor tokens remain locked in a Binance-co-managed vesting contract with no unlocks for 12 months, and that the sold tokens came from the initial circulating ecosystem allocation handed to an OTC counterparty that it says breached lock-up terms. The company said it has paused ties with that counterparty, initiated legal action and pledged to distribute future ecosystem tokens solely through on-chain vesting.

ZachXBT questioned why it took the team two full days to notice roughly 25% of the TGE float being dumped, and why the team neither stopped the sell-off nor issued a public statement before his post. The two accounts differ on the source of the tokens: ZachXBT attributes the sales to the team multisig, while Axis attributes them to an OTC counterparty's breach.

telegram · wublockchainenglish · · Single source

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The impact is concentrated in AXIS itself: holders on Binance, Coinbase and Upbit were exposed to a reported 40% drawdown days after listing, and the dispute highlights how team and ecosystem allocations can reach the open market through OTC arrangements even when vesting contracts remain locked. It does not appear to be a systemic event for broader crypto markets.

Franklin Templeton Launches Two U.S. Equity-Bitcoin Combination ETFs, Reinvesting Stock Dividends into Bitcoin

Background

Background

A dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) traditionally uses a stock's cash dividends to buy additional shares of the same company; these two funds redirect that cash flow into bitcoin exposure instead. The products follow Franklin Templeton's earlier registration of the two Bitcoin DRIP ETFs for Nasdaq listing.

Franklin Templeton announced the Franklin U.S. Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and the Franklin U.S. Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT), both to be listed on Nasdaq. Each starts with a 95% equity / 5% bitcoin allocation and systematically reinvests dividends from the underlying stocks into bitcoin, with the index reviewing the bitcoin exposure quarterly to keep it as a secondary allocation.

The products give equity investors a dividend-funded route to bitcoin exposure without buying crypto directly, extending a large asset manager's lineup of crypto-related ETFs.

FBEQ covers roughly 500 of the largest U.S. companies by market capitalization with a 0.09% fee, while FIBT covers 100 large non-financial U.S. companies listed on Nasdaq with a 0.19% fee. The quarterly index review is structured by rule to keep bitcoin a minority weight rather than a variable, discretionary position.

telegram · foresightnews · · Single source

Analysis and references

Impact analysis

The transmission channel is ETF flows: dividends from equity holdings are converted into bitcoin exposure, so the funds add incremental, rules-based demand tied to equity dividend payouts rather than to investor timing. The 5% starting weight keeps the direct flow small relative to dedicated spot-bitcoin funds, and the quarterly rebalancing rules determine how that exposure drifts over time.
